“We are guilty of many errors and many faults, but our worst crime is

abandoning the children, neglecting the fountain of life.

Many of the things we need can wait.

The child cannot.

Right now is the time his bones are being formed, his blood is being made,

and his senses are being developed.

To him we cannot answer ‘Tomorrow’, his name is Today.”

-Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral

Combating illiteracy has been a major focus of Rotary International since 1986 - and for good reason. UNESCO estimates there are over 1 billion adults and children in the world are unable to read and write. Millions more are functionally illiterate, without reading and writing skills; they remain mired in poverty and hopelessness - unable to participate fully in the life of their communities or everyday life.
